Doodles is a 1982 American live-action/animated fantasy comedy film produced by Paramount Cartoon Studios and released by Paramount Pictures. It is the 26th feature film produced by the studio, it is directed by Barry Sonnenfeld in his screen directing debut, with animated sequences directed by Nancy Farwell. The film stars Pamelyn Ferdin, Louise English, Rob Paulsen, Dom DeLuise, Eddie Murphy, B.J. Ward, Yvette Mimieux, and Tim Curry. The film follows a young adult artist named Briana Tytla who gets help from a group of six doodles who come to life, but she can only see them and hear them. Doodles was the last Paramount animated film with Michael Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg producing before they moved to its rival studio Walt Disney Productions. It's the first Paramount animated film to received a PG-rating in the United Sates.
The film was released into theatres on February 12, 1982, and it received positive reviews from critics, who praised the animation, voice performances, soundtrack, writing, and humor. The film had earned $120 million financially, making it a critical and commercial success.
The film's success helped establish Paramount Cartoon Studios returning as a prime competitor to Disney in feature animation and paved the way for future animated movies from Paramount Animation, as well as future live-action/animated movies. A long-awaited sequel, titled Doodles: Redrawn, was released on March 11, 2022.
