Doodles: Redrawn is a 2022 American live-action/animated adventure comedy film produced by Paramount Animation, Right Coast Productions and New Republic Pictures for Paramount Pictures, with live-action scenes directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, and animation directed by Zaiden Fischer. It is the 77th feature film produced by the studio. Produced by Alexandra Farwell based on a screenplay by David N. Weiss, Alexandra Farwell and Zak Penn and written by Alexandra Farwell, Julie Young, Zaiden Fischer and Nadia Hanson.

A sequel to the 1986 film Doodles, the film stars Milla Jovovich, Laura Bailey, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Scarlett Johansson, and Brad Pitt in live-action roles, with Rob Paulsen, Eddie Murphy and Frank Welker reprising their voice roles from the original film and the new additions of Dean Edwards (replacing the late Dom DeLuise), Tara Strong (replacing B.J. Ward), Asa Butterfield (replacing Yvette Mimieux), Chris Pratt (replacing Paul Williams), Tom Holland, Patrick Stewart, Lee Majdoub (replacing Tim Curry), Clancy Brown (replacing Mel Blanc) and Tom Kenny (replacing Charles Nelson Reilly).

Doodles: Redrawn premiered in Los Angeles on March 1, 2022 and was theatrically released in the United States by Paramount Pictures on March 11, 2022. The film received positive reviews from critics, with praise for its animation, voice cast (particularly Holland, Stewart, Murphy and Strong), visual effects, and musical score by Alan Silvestri, though criticized the 102-minute runtime. It was a box office success, grossing $855.9 million worldwide on a budget of $100 million. An untitled spin-off film is in development.

Writing and casting[]

In November 2020, it was revealed that Milla Jolovich, Laura Bailey, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Scarlett Johansson, Brad Pitt, Bruce Willis, and Grant Palmer were announced to join the cast, performing as Briana Tylta, Susan Tylta, TBD, TBD, TBD, TBD, and TBD, respectively. Around the same time, Tom Holland, Patrick Stewart, Eddie Murphy, Tara Strong, Asa Butterfield, Chris Pratt, Lee Majdoub, and Tom Kenny were added to the cast, with them voicing Yowsers, Rylan T. Rex, Hot Smooth, Mother Clock, Destiny, Dr. Primate, Lord Lower, and Crawler, Liger and Ratty, respectively. In January 2021, it was announced that Noah Centieno, Daniel Kaluuya, and Ty Simpkins would be added to the cast, with the three voicing TBD, TBD, and TBD, respectively.

Principal photography[]

Principal photography took place in Sacramento, California on June 29, 2021, and wrapping up on September 13, 2021, spanning 76 days. Additional photography took place in Los Angeles.

Animation, visual effects and design[]

The animation and design for the film was handled at the in-house animation department of Paramount Animation in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, with additional animation being done at Canadian independent animation company Mercury Filmworks. Originally envisioned as a 3D computer-animated film, Doodles: Redrawn was later conceived as a traditionally animated 2D film, with the animation frame rate being 24 fps.

Mercury Filmworks animation director Chris Jordan said in an interview that they "wanted the animation to be more smooth and bouncy, rather than rushed and jumpy," with him adding that "smooth and bouncy animation would bring more life to the movie's atmosphere". Visual effects were provided by Blur Studio, with Mercury also providing visual effects.

Soundtrack[]

The score was composed by American composer Alan Silvestri. Silvestri had just finished the composition of themes for The Witches, so he was hired by Paramount Pictures to score the film. The scoring took place at the Clint Eastwood Scoring Stage, at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California. The album was released on March 8, 2022 on CD and Digital through Paramount Music.

Doodles: Redrawn premiered in Los Angeles, California on March 1, 2022 and was theatrically released in the United States on March 11, 2022 by Paramount Pictures. The film was rated PG by the Motion Picture Association for "mild language and rude humor".

Doodles: Redrawn opened theatrically in the United States on March 11, 2022 by Paramount Pictures. It grossed $376.2 million domestically and $479.7 million overseas for a worldwide total of $855.9 million, on a budget of $100 million.

Critical response[]

On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Doodles: Redrawn was an approval rating 80% based on reviews from 241 critics, with an average rating of 6.85/10. The site's critical consensus reads: "The long-awaited sequel to its predecessor, with stunning visuals, excellent cinematography, and a talented cast, Doodles: Redrawn redraws everything good from the original and drafts a beautiful story." On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 75 out of 100 based on 28 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". On CinemaScore, the film is assigned an average grade "A" on its A+ to F scale.
