Musical Stories is a 1952 American live-action/animated anthology musical film produced by Famous Studios. It was directed by Nancy Farwell and Isadore Sparber, co-written by Irving Dressler, Jack Mercer and Farwell, and produced by Seymour Knietel and Sparber. It is the eighth Paramount feature animated film, the film took the inspiration vanes of Disney's package animated films from the 1940s, such as Fantasia, Make Mine Music, Fun and Fancy Free, Melody Time and The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, featuring ten different segments with different stories. Though the film is primarily animated, it also uses live-action segments to join its stories together.

It was released by Paramount Pictures on June 25, 1952, and it grossed $3.58 million in distribution rentals over a $1.5 million budget during its initial run. It received critical acclaim and became a box office success. The Musical Stories franchise has grown to include video games, theme park attractions, a live concert series, and two sequels — Musical Stories 90th (2002) and Musical Stories: A New Revival (2012).

Home media[]

Musical Stories was originally released on VHS, Laserdisc and Betamax on June 26, 1981 by Paramount Home Video. On September 18, 1992, the film was re-released on both VHS and LaserDisc as part of the film's 40th anniversary. This was followed by another VHS release on October 1, 1996. The film was released on DVD with 5.1 surround sound for the first time on August 20, 2002, Musical Stories was later released with Musical Stories 90th on DVD in January 2003. The films were issued both separately and in a three-disc set called A Musical Stories Anthology. A variety of bonus features were included in the bonus disc, A Musical Stories Legacy. This edition attempted to follow as closely as possible the runtime and format of the original roadshow version.

Both films were reissued again by Paramount Home Media Distribution in November 2012 separately, as a two-disc DVD/Blu-ray set and a combined DVD and Blu-ray four-disc set (named the "Musical Stories 2 Movie Collection") that featured 1080p high-definition video and 7.1 surround sound. The 2012 version of Musical Stories featured a new restoration by Reliance MediaWorks and a new sound restoration, but was editorially identical to the 2002 version.

In October 25, 2022, both films, along with Musical Stories: A New Revival, were re-released on HD and 4K digital download, with a physical media re-release on Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray.
