Noveltoons: Tooned Out! is a 2009 live-action/animated action-adventure fantasy comedy-drama film produced by Paramount Animation and Original Film, in association with Walden Media, for Paramount Pictures. A direct sequel to Noveltoons: Wacky & Out! (2004), it is directed by Tim Hill and based on the Noveltoons franchise by Famous Studios. Produced by Julia Pistor and Neal H. Moritz based on a screenplay by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, Alexandra Farwell, Karey Kirkpatrick and Peter S. Seaman, the film stars Dylan Sprouse, Dwayne Johnson, Penélope Cruz, and Matt Damon in live-action roles, with Billy West, Phil LaMarr, Sarah Silverman, Kenan Thompson, Kristen Schaal, Zooey Deschanel, and Bob Bergen in voice roles.
Danny Pearson, a 15-year-old high-school student attending Highland Park High School, lives with his father Christopher, a former computer engineer, and Victoria, a full-time elementary school teacher. One day, when studying for an upcoming exam, a mysterious portal opens up in Danny's room and multiple cartoon characters are thrown out of the portal, to which Danny finds out they are of the Noveltoons. Meanwhile, James A.I. Jones, a powerful cyberhacker, was planning to eliminate the Noveltoons from existence.
After having its release date changed twice, Noveltoons: Tooned Out! premiered in Sydney, Australia on July 11, 2009 before being theatrically released in the United States on August 7, 2009. Upon release, the film received mixed-to-positive reviews, with praise for its performance, animation, visual effects, voice cast, action sequences, and score by Christopher Lennertz, though criticized the plot, runtime, and pacing. The film was a box office success, grossing $589.5 million on its budget of $120 million. It was the last Noveltoons film until All Together Now, in 2022.

Principal photography[]
Originally to be filmed in Perth, Scotland, the film's production shifted to Dallas, Texas, where most of the movie was filmed. Principal photography began in Dallas, Texas on September 24, 2006, and wrapped up on January 25, 2007, spanning 147 days. Between December 2 and December 18, 2006, the film was additionally shot in Frisco. The schools used for filming were the Highland Park High School in Dallas, and Wilma Fisher Elementary School in Frisco.
Animation and visual effects[]
The animation was handled at Rough Draft Studios and Yeson Entertainment in South Korea, while additional animation was handled at the in-house animation department for Paramount Animation in Hollywood, California. Visual effects were provided by Double Negative, Moving Picture Company, and Scanline VFX.
For the fight sequences, Rhythm & Hues Studios supervised in CGI animation to remodel the Highland Park and Wilma Fisher schools, with 148 animators designing and texturing the schools for said sequences. The stormy red clouds were designed and animated by Double Negative, with Moving Picture Company designing the hacker-styled robots for the battle. MPC also supervised in making the interior of James A.I. Jones' death robot.

Soundtrack[]
The film's score was composed by Christopher Lennertz. Director Tim Hill envisioned the score to be "full of wit", "action-packed", and "wholesome". Lennertz scored the film's music at the Newman Scoring Stage at 20th Century Fox, which spanned from April 11, 2008 until January 28, 2009. The album was released on August 5, 2009 through Interscope Records.

Noveltoons: Tooned Out! was originally scheduled for release on December 19, 2008, but was changed to August 7, 2009 due to the film still in its animation development. It held its premiere in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on July 11, 2009 before being released theatrically on August 7, 2009 in the United States by Paramount Pictures. The film was rated PG by the MPAA for "violence, rude humor, mild language, and action".

Noveltoons: Tooned Out! was released on DVD, HD-DVD and UMD on November 29, 2009 by Paramount Home Entertainment. On May 22, 2010, the film was released on Blu-ray, after Paramount dropped the distribution of films on HD-DVD. It was later released on Ultra HD Blu-ray on June 29, 2017, and was added to Paramount+ on March 3, 2021.

It grossed $197.4 million in the United States and Canada and $392.1 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $589.5 million against its budget of $120 million. The film became the eighth-highest grossing film of 2009, behind The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the third highest-grossing animated film of 2009 behind Up, and the 40th highest-grossing animated film of all time, behind Tangled.

Based on 184 professional critic reviews, the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reports that 62% of those reviews were positive, with an average rating of 5.45/10. On the website, the critics' consensus reads, "While its action may be entertaining and the animation may be of its best, Noveltoons: Tooned Out! becomes so thin that its plot is literally visible." Using a weighted average calculator, Metacritic assigned the film a score of 55 out of 100, based on 27 critics, indicating "mixed or average" reviews.
