History[]

In December 1990, Paramount Pictures announced that it was establishing a new division dedicated to publishing computer and video game console software, called Paramount Interactive. The initial staff consisted of 200 newly hired employees. The company was established on January 4, 1991. The few market successes were third-party-published games based on major Paramount animated features like The World of Fairy Tales and Meredith's Journey in 1992 and 1994 respectively. This led to a move from self-developed and self-published to funding and development management of games with third parties published the game.

The company published games based on Paramount Pictures film and movie properties, as well as some original titles like Crazy Rush!. They continued to license games based on Nickelodeon, Games Animation and various Paramount film properties over the years to such video game publishers as THQ.

In March 2005, Viacom announced plans of looking into splitting into two publicly traded companies under the continuing ownership of National Amusements because of a stagnating stock price. The internal rivalry between Les Moonves and Tom Freston, longtime heads of CBS and MTV Networks respectively, and the controversy of Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show, which resulted in MTV being banned from producing any more Super Bowl halftime shows, were also seen as factors. The split was approved by Viacom's board on June 14, 2005, and took effect on January 1, 2006, and effectively reversed the Viacom/CBS merger of 1999. Paramount Digital Entertainment remained owned by the new Viacom, but they sold most of its publishing duties to other video game companies, such as THQ, Sega and Activision.
