Puffy's Years is a 2022 American 3D computer-animated comedy film produced by Paramount Animation. It is the 78th feature film produced by the studio. The third and final installment in the Puffy franchise, and a sequel to Puffy's Big Break (2019). The film is directed by Julie Young from a screenplay by David N. Weiss, Jonathan Aibel and Gleen Berger and a story by Young. Amber Frank, Mindy Kaling, Kari Wahlgren, Ariel Winter, Kate Beckinsale and Regan Burns reprise their roles from the previous films, with newcomers Tom Holland (replacing Jason Drucker), Ben Schwartz (replacing Jake T. Austin), Olivia Colman, Jennifer Garner and Kathryn Newton joining the ensemble cast. The film's plot involves when Puffy Huff is now 16 years old, she must learn about the facts of life right before she become a grown adult in the future. Not wanting to lose her friends, Puffy must spend one more life with them while also trying to fit in with the other teenagers.

Puffy's Years premiered at the Regency Village Theatre in Los Angeles on April 24, 2022, and was released in the United States on May 13, 2022, by Paramount Pictures. The film was released to generally positive reviews critics with many considering it an improvement over its second predecessor and commended its humor, musical score, animation, the vocal performances of Frank, Holland and Schwartz, emotional weight of the story and conclusion. The film has grossed over $1 billion worldwide, becoming the highest grossing film of the franchise, the fifth film released during the COVID-19 pandemic to gross $1 billion, and the third highest grossing film of 2022.

In January 2019, in an interview with CNN, Young hinted that a third film would be possible, saying, "we would like to show more stories featuring these unique and special characters. But we may have to focus on the relationship between Puffy and her friends." By August 2019, then-Paramount Animation president Mireille Soria has confirmed that the development of Puffy 3 is underway.

On September 17, 2019, it was announced that Puffy 3 will be released on April 8, 2022. In November 2019, Doug Sweetland announced he will not direct the film due to his focus on directing Virtual Journey: Game Changer.

Release[]

Theatrical[]

Puffy's Years was theatrically released by Paramount Pictures first in several international markets, including France, Mexico, Spain, Germany, and the Netherlands on May 6, 2022, and was later released in the United States on May 13, 2022, in RealD 3D, Dolby Cinema and IMAX. The film was originally scheduled to be released on April 8, 2022. On July 23, 2020, the film was moved up to the May 13 release, as a result of Paramount's updated film slate, with Sonic the Hedgehog 2 taking its place. In theaters, the film was accompanied by a short film 90s Life.

A short film, Puffy's Luck, that promoted the third film was shown in front of theatrical screenings of Virtual Journey: Game Changer back in May 2021. Paramount cancelled the Russian release in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The film had its world premiere at the Regency Village Theatre in Los Angeles on April 24, 2022, where the cast and filmmakers were attendees at the premiere.

In addition to the film, a 48-minute documentary about the making of the film, especially focusing on its creative team, entitled Growing Up: The Making of Puffy's Years, was released on Paramount+ the same day.

Marketing[]

The teaser poster was revealed on September 11, 2021, and the teaser trailer was officially released online on Paramount Animation' YouTube channel on September 16, and attained 124.2 million views within the first 24 hours.

The film's first official trailer was later released online on November 21, 2021, along with a new poster. Paramount released a short film, titled Puffy's Lucky Christmas, as a Christmas-styled promotion for the film on December 22, 2021. A second and final official trailer was released on March 8, 2022.

Paramount partner with more than 100 licensing and promotional partners to market the film including General Mills, M&M's, Target, Fandango, Funko, 7-Eleven, Dodge, McDonald's, and Kraft. Lego has revealed five new sets based on scenes from Puffy's Years. The five sets were available on April 3, 2022. A collaboration with Minecraft, which was a DLC pack themed to the overall franchise and the film itself, was released in the game's Marketplace in late-April.

Home media and streaming[]

Puffy's Years was released for download and streaming on Paramount+ on June 28, 2022. The same day, EPIX added the film to their library following Paramount's pay-one-window deal with the service. It was released on DVD, Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray on September 6, 2022. Bonus features include an audio commentary track, deleted scenes, a behind-the-scenes featurette, and 3 animated short films.

Following the release of Puffy's Years on Paramount+, viewer tracking application Samba TV reported that 3.6 million U.S. households watched the film within its first five days of being available on Paramount+, comparable to Virtual Journey: Game Changer.
