Susan, Maria and David: Mission Rescue is an American animated television series produced by Paramount Cartoon Studios. The original cartoon series premiered on syndication on September 12, 1986, and ran for a total of 126 episodes over four seasons, with its final episode airing on March 22, 1991. Created by Nancy Farwell and developed by Warren Kremer and Howard Post, it featured established Noveltoon characters Susan, Maria and David in a new setting as a teenagers.

Mission Rescue has inspired merchandise, including video games, merchandise, and comic books, along with an animated theatrical spin-off film entitled Susan, Maria and David: The Secret Mission, that was released to theaters across the United States on July 14, 1989. The series is notable for being the first Paramount cartoon to be produced for weekday syndication, with its success paving the way for future Paramount cartoons, such as Magical Forest and The Knights of Crystalland, creating the syndication block Paramount ToonWorld.

A live-action/animated metafictional sequel film with the same name was released on July 15, 2021. From July 13–15, 2022, Nicktoons, Paramount Kids and NickRewind reran the show to promote the film. In December 2019, ViacomCBS (now Paramount Global) announced the revival of the show, with the intention of rebooting the series. The rebooted series premiered on November 18, 2021.

Legacy[]

The show proved an immense success for Paramount, who decided to commission other cartoons with a similar level of quality, which included Magical Forest, The Knights of Crystalland, and Hoppy Tales. In addition, Mission Rescue also spawned its own feature-length movie, entitled Susan, Maria and David: The Secret Mission, which was released to theaters on July 14, 1989, along with a franchise of merchandising, including toys, comic books and video games, and eventually a revival in 2021, that rebooted the series. In 1991, the same year the original show ended, Kath Soucie, Tress MacNeille and E.G. Daily - the voices of Maria Johnson, Amanda Farwell, and Stephanie Goodluck - obtained more voiceover work outside of Paramount when they began providing the voices of some characters on Nickelodeon's Rugrats.

Theatrical film[]

Susan, Maria and David: The Secret Mission was released nationwide in the United States on July 14, 1989, by Paramount Pictures and Paramount Cartoon Studios, Paramount TV Animation division and Paramount Animation France. The film follows Susan, Maria, David and the Teen Rescuers as they try to defeat the evil mastermind from affect their hometown on some fantastical scale.

The film was well-received by critics and audiences, but was considered a financial disappointment by Paramount and several planned sequels were abandoned as a result.

Paramount+ film[]

A live-action/animated feature-length film directed by Chris Wedge; written by Patrick Casey and Josh Miller; produced by David Ellison, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and starring Idina Menzel, Chloë Grace Moretz and Ben Schwartz as the voices of Susan, Maria and David was released on July 15, 2021, on Paramount+. Rob Paulsen, Tress MacNeille and E.G. Daily reprise their roles of Matthew, Amanda, and Stephanie, while Cathy Cavadini, Kath Soucie and Dee Bradley Baker also reprise their roles of Susan, Maria and David for a brief scene.

Reboot[]

In December 2019, ViacomCBS announced a reboot of the original Susan, Maria and David: Mission Rescue TV series, alongside the 2021 film. It was originally going to be premiered on Paramount Kids in August 2021. In March 2021, it would premiere on Paramount+ in November 2021 instead. It premiered on November 18, 2021.
