Development[]
The idea for a film based on Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island was proposed by Zaiden Fischer during the production of Thieves and Kings, The Little Princess, and Twin, Duo, & Two, and after the box office failure of Disney's Treasure Planet. At the time, Paramount encouraged everyone at its feature animation division to come up with ideas for more computer-animated features. Fischer, then-Paramount Feature Animation president John Cohen, and Dallas Sharp developed Fischer's concept into a story before pitching it to Paramount.
