The Nutcracker is a 1959 American animated fantasy film directed and produced by Nancy Farwell, written by Irving Dressler, Bill Turner, Jack Ward and Isadore "I." Klein, based on the story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E. T. A. Hoffmann and also influenced by its ballet adaptation The Nutcracker. It was scored by Winston Sharples, who wrote the music for Famous Studios' short films.
The 11th Paramount animated film, it was produced by Paramount Cartoon Los Angeles and it was released by Paramount Pictures on August 20, 1959, and it was grossed $7.2 million from theatrical distribution rentals over a $3 million budget, making it the fifth animated film to be released by Paramount. The film had gained a cult following in recent years.

In 1954, producer Seymour Kneitel, who was in production on White Fang at a time obtained a copy of one of E. T. A. Hoffmann's stories. Kneitel selected "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King". It received $800,000 to fund the film with distribution being handled by Paramount Pictures.
