Virtual Journey: Level Two is a 2013 American computer-animated science fiction action-comedy film produced by Paramount Animation for Paramount Pictures. It is the 63rd feature film produced by the studio. It was directed by Mike Moon from a screenplay by Nicholas Stoller and John Hamburg. It focuses on Kasey Jones, Karissa June and their friends as they take a journey to a place called Retrotopia. During their adventure, Kasey, Karissa and the gang encounter many strange commodities of Retrotopia. However, after rescuing a swordswoman from a gang of glitches led by Cyber, they soon discover a new foe is planning to destroy both Retrotopia and Virtual World, so they must stop him before it's too late. The original voice cast of the first film — Patton Oswalt, Katie Crown, Josh Gad, David Spade, Kristen Bell and Ben Schwartz — reprised their roles, joined by Sarah Silverman, Jake T. Austin, and Chris Pine.

Virtual Journey: Level Two premiered in Los Angeles on August 10, 2013, and was released in the United States on August 23, 2013 by Paramount Pictures. It received positive reviews from critics, although some said it was not as "fresh" as the first film, grossing over $964 million worldwide on its $88 million budget, making it the highest-grossing animated film of 2013, the second highest-grossing film of the year. It was followed by Virtual Journey: Next Dimensions on May 19, 2017. A television series was developed and aired on Nickelodeon in 2014.

Plot[]

Following the events of the end of the first film, after the celebration, Kasey Jones, Karissa June and their friends battle a sadistic mastermind who has just appeared to terrorize Virtual World. They successfully defeat him, with the mastermind taken into custody. Three years later, Kasey Jones, Karissa June, G.A.M.E., Bitly, Nyasia and Quickly are now renowned as heroes, with Kasey and Karissa staying as a couple and still dating over the years. Meanwhile, a gang of glitch led by Cyber invades and captures a secret coding base located far away from Virtual World, renaming it "Glitch Palace". Cyber encounters a tracking map that leads them to a place called Retrotopia, and they travel to the city, as part of their evil ruler Growler's plan. One day, after saving and protecting the city's valuable game coins from a bunch of monsters, Karissa discovers a possible person before she runs off into the portal. Karissa noticed that Retrotopia is actually real the whole time, but Kasey refused these claims of the existence of another video game world. But in order to prove it real, Kasey and Karissa sneak out anyway to look for the new era with G.A.M.E., Bitly, Nyasia and Quickly joining them. The group travel through the Virtual Play service to the Retrotopia, a place where all other old games lived.

The gang is welcomed by the inhabitants in Retrotopia, and is given a tour by Lawrence. Following a tour, Kasey and his friends encounter new video game commodities of Retrotopia. However, Cyber's gang arrives in Retrotopia and attacks the city, while Kasey and his friends stop them, only for the glitches to retreat. Cyber appears on the city's central monitor, explaining that everyone will not survive in the next 50 hours, as soon as Growler and his henchmen destroy and hijack the city and later Virtual World, as well as planning to wipe out the entire video game universe. Shocked, Lawrence gives Kasey, Karissa, G.A.M.E., Bitly, Nyasia and Quickly their new mission to stop Growler from destroying both Retrotopia and Virtual World. After the group defeated most of the glitches, Cyber's gang finally captured them and took them to Growler's lair, where they met Growler, a cybernetic creature whose video game has been abandoned for 25 years after having mechanical problems. After Growler throws them to his prison, the gang meets Frida, a swordswoman who is willing to escape the prison and has a hatred for Growler and Cyber's gang who torture her.

Kasey and the gang manage to rescue Frida and escape the prison. Not wanting to be alone and unprotected, Frida follows the gang. However, Karissa and Nyasia do not trust Frida, but much to her jealousy. After the escape, Frida explains Cyber stealing the game's own Retro Gem from its shrine, gaining control of all the retro enemies and plans to use it to have the enemies invade both Retrotopia and Virtual World along with his plans to destroy the whole video game universe. During their mission to find the Retro Gem, the gang come across a skater named Zain, who takes them to a group of 8-bit builders, led by Rutt, who Bitly tries to befriend but the builders need to concentrate on their construction site. In order to stop Growler, Zain then tells Karissa and G.A.M.E. to warn everyone in Retrotopia that the only way to get back there is to go through World of Paramount. There, Karissa befriends the Paramount Animation Girls, being encouraged by them to address her sense of unfulfillment and reaching an epiphany. Meanwhile, as the gang comes across the forest village, they discovered that Growler's army forces invade the village, where Kasey, Frida and Nyasia attempt to fight them off, but they are soon confronted by Cyber himself, only just escaping when Zain throws a smoke grenade as a distraction and leads them to a secret passage. Frida and Zain ends up spending time with Kasey while helping him. Karissa and G.A.M.E. meets back up with the team at a mountain, where they forgot to tell the citizens of Retrotopia, after being caught up with Paramount Animation Girls, getting Frida frustrated, causing her and Karissa to get into an argument. Karissa becomes suspicious of Frida's motives, but Kasey refuses to accept their statement and the rest of the gang leave on their own, leaving Kasey, Frida and Zain, causing Karissa and the gang to turn against them.

The five sneak into Cyber's hideout so they could spy on Cyber and his henchmen. As they make a sound which makes Cyber and his henchmen notice them, the five manage to escape from the minions. Karissa tries to make a run for it, but is immediately captured by Cyber's henchmen. Cyber is furious at Karissa for spying on him, so he sends her back into Growler's jail. Meanwhile, Kasey, Frida and Zain eventually find the golden gem in a storage place, but are caught by Growler, dual gun-wielding boy Harper, Frida' rival Talia, the rest of the glitches, and his entire army. Growler tells them that once he puts the gem on his new machine, he will destroy the game universe once and for all, but only if Kasey, Frida and Zain agree to play in the "Zooplympics" games against Harper, Talia and the glitches, and make a wager with Growler: he will give the gem back to them if they win, but Growler will keep the gem and Kasey, Frida and Zain will go back to prison if they lose.

At the games, three ghosts Benny, Lenny and Bobby help Kasey, Frida and Zain win the "Zooplympics" in order to get the gem back. When they won the game and got the gem back, Frida and Zain encourages Kasey to visit their other friends in Retrotopia so they can spend time with the trio, but Kasey feels drawn to get his friends back and restored the gem while Frida tells him that she cannot go with him, and that Retrotopia is her only home that she ever wanted. Kasey refuses to believe her and continues on alone to retrieve the gem, but unwittingly finds himself in Growler's castle, where he discovered that Cyber and his gang captured Karissa, which she told him that she discovers that Glower has been planning to build a powerful malware missile called "GlitchWave" that will destroy the entire city upon impact to achieve world domination.

Growler and his army return to the castle, and Growler talks to them, saying that he wants the gem back so he can launch the missile and destroy both Retrotopia and Virtual World. He also orders Cyber and his gang to capture Frida and Zain, bring them to the castle and then destroy Virtual World and take over the city. Shocked, Kasey and Karissa return to their friends to show the gem to them. Kasey warns them that the missile destroys both Retrotopia and Virtual World when the gem is slotted on Growler's machine. As the gang about to returned the gem to Retrotopia, Karissa, G.A.M.E., Bitly, Nyasia and Quickly are suddenly captured by Cyber and his gang, who also captured Frida and Zain as well, and Cyber takes the gem, but as Kasey tries to fight Cyber, he fails and gets knocked out by him, while Benny, Lenny and Bobby watch this.

Kasey is about to lose hope, but he actually discovered the Retro Temple as the the temple's guardians told him to find his epiphany in order to save his friends and the universe. Kasey teams up with the ghosts, Frida and Zain's other friends and they arrive at the castle's tower to rescue Karissa, G.A.M.E., Bitly, Nyasia, Quickly, Frida and Zain. However, Cyber and the gang find a bound and gagged Frida strapped to the GlitchWave, and start to untie her, but Growler confronts them by grabbing the remote to launch the missile. A fight issues, as Kasey frees his friends and lead the citizens of both Retrotopia and Virtual World arrive and are able to defeat Growler, Cyber and all of their army (expect Harper and Talia which they quit). At the end of the battle, Cyber becomes enraged and gets tries to kill Kasey, but Frida, who is revealed to be Cyber's ex-girlfriend, shot him using the laser gun (thanks to G.A.M.E.) and saves Kasey. Cyber then gets transform into an endoskeleton. However, Growler traps Kasey under rubble and threatens to kill him. Kasey later finds Growler in his castle, just about to break the gems. Kasey fights Growler throughout the lair and accidentally lets the gem fall off the castle, landing on the ground which caused the gem to break into pieces. With Kasey nearly killed, he realizes that he must follow the epiphany that the temple's guardians told him. Kasey knocks Growler with one of Zain's weapons and throws him at the self-destruct button, with a huge explosion destroying Growler's castle. Everyone from both Retrotopia and Virtual World believe Kasey is dead, but it turns out that he survived the explosion.

With Growler and Cyber now gone, Frida and Zain now being hailed as heroes of Retrotopia, G.A.M.E. recovers the gem for the city, Karissa and Frida befriend each other, and Harper proposes to Talia. After saving the Retrotopia, Kasey and the gang head back home while Frida, Zain and the others say goodbye to them. After Kasey and Karissa say goodbye to the citizens, they partake in healthy social activities in the Virtual World. However, they are greeted by mysterious texter girls and announcing their plans to kidnap everyone. In a mid-credits scene, back in the real world, the heating mechanic that Ruby, Kasey's mother, hired finally shows up, only to be drawn to the magical arcade cabinet.
